10 Incredible Paul McCartney Songs You’ve Never Heard
9. Oh Woman, Oh Why
If anyone ever tries to run down Paul McCartney, or claims that he is nothing but a purveyor of silly, soppy love songs, don’t argue. Just quietly slip Oh Woman, Oh Why on the stereo and wait for them to ask, “hey who is this? It’s great!”
Oh Woman, Oh Why is like a fleshed out version of his earlier Beatles track, Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? The story of a no good, cheating scoundrel who ends up getting gunned down by the the woman he’s wronged, it’s a simple lyric but backed by a low slung, hypnotic, blues groove. It also features one of Sir Paul’s most impassioned and fiery vocals, Macca wailing over the track’s tight, interweaving guitar lines.
As with the RAM album that this track preceded, Linda McCartney can be heard on backing vocals, Macca as ever getting the best from a limited but charming performer. He also augments the track’s steady rhythm track with real gun shots.
This was the B-side to McCartney’s first solo single, Another Day. It continues the tradition from his Beatle days of really great songs hidden on the flip side of singles.
