10 Incredible Songs That Took NO Time To Write

6. Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)

It’s kind of fitting that a song written as a pisstake of the dumb, hedonistic, party-eulogising rhetoric of a lot of mainstream rock music in the mid ‘80s was cooked up so quickly with so little thought invested in it.

Supposedly, (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) - look at all them brackets - was scribbled down on the back of napkin in the now-demolished Palladium nightclub in New York City by the three Beastie Boys and their longtime collaborative chum, Rick Rubin, in a matter of minutes.

Fuelled by vodka and grapefruit juice, the song was intended to be a goof aimed at lampooning hair-brained rockers and drunken frat boys - so much so that the group played the latter in the music video for the single.

The irony of the sendup was that it endeared the band to exactly the kind of people they were laughing at - establishing the song as the unofficial backing track to any and all acts of alcohol-induced teenage stupidity committed for many, many years after release.
