10 Incredible Songs That Took NO Time To Write

5. The Beatles - Yesterday

Perhaps this one is cheating a little, but before you reach for the internet pitchforks, let me explain:

The melody for Yesterday - that delicate, lilting, exquisitely bittersweet melody - supposedly came to Paul McCartney in a dream.

Now, according to a quick Google on the subject, dreams can last anywhere between a few seconds and half an hour. Ergo, even if we’re being pessimistic, Macca took just 30 minutes to come up with one of the most famous and universally adored songs ever… and he wasn’t even conscious.

Awakening with this infectious ear worm anchored in his head, Paul apparently spent the next few weeks asking any and everybody he met from the world of music whether or not they recognised the tune. After several reassurances that it was indeed his, the bassist properly committed it to record, and the rest, as they say, is history.

More than anything though, there’s something quite sweet about a man of McCartney’s peerless talents being so bowled over by the song that he couldn’t actually believe it was his brain that came up with it in the first place.

It just goes to show that music truly is an intangible gift from god knows where, and that dreams are mystifying wormholes beyond our mortal ken.
