10 Legendary Albums That Fans Originally Hated

2. Pinkerton - Weezer

After the loss of Kurt Cobain, Weezer was one of the few bands that was able to cheer us up. Since grunge's angst and turmoil had become frighteningly real, this was almost an alternative rock take on something like the Beach Boys, with Rivers Cuomo singing about how cool it was being one of the nerds. With success comes fame though, and Rivers was not ready for the kind of backlash that came in a post Buddy Holly world.

As the band went on hiatus, Rivers started writing songs that were intended to be a part of a concept record called Songs From the Black Hole, until it was eventually folded into Pinkerton. While this is a much more introspective record than the Blue Album, fans were not ready for their care free rock band to start writing songs about angst and depression, even voting it one of the worst albums of the year in Rolling Stone.

The public's open rejection of the record led the band to go on hiatus for a little while...until something strange started to happen. In the early '00s, fans kept coming back to Pinkerton, looking at it as a great entry in the emo stripe of rock music. Ever since that rejection though, Rivers has always kept the record at arm's length, wishing that he had made it a little less confessional and always thinking of it as a hideous record compared to what they would do later down the line. Given where it is these days, you don't have to be so hard on yourself, Rivers. Even if this record was a little painful to look back on, it's been helping fans deal with their own emotions for decades.
