10 Legendary Albums That Will Make You Love Grunge

6. Purple - Stone Temple Pilots

For most of the early days of grunge, Stone Temple Pilots may as well have been known as the pariahs of the industry. Committing the cardinal sin of coming from California, most of the Seattle scene took one look at Scott Weiland in the video for Plush and wrote the band off for being a bunch of posers trying to sponge off of their sound. These guys were still hard working musicians though, and Purple helped win a lot of people over to their side of grunge rock.

While there are more than a few Eddie Vedder-isms in the way that Scott Weiland sings from time to time, they came with the tunes to back it up, going for something that was a perfect mix between the dirtiness of grunge and the more bombastic side of classic rock. When you listen to a song like Meatplow, you can tell that these guys at least had a handle on what grunge was all about, as well as being able to flip things on a dime when creating a grunge song worthy of a stadium on Big Empty.

And as much as people love to praise the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam for creating some of the best tunes from this era, there's nothing about Interstate Love Song that could possibly be improved, having just the kind of blown out sound that both grunge purists and classic rock fans can appreciate. This may have been the more mainstream version of what grunge could be, but if this is what "selling out" looks like for grunge, we didn't have to worry about a thing.
