10 Legendary Albums That Will Make You Love Grunge

5. Singles - Soundtrack

Back when grunge was starting to gel, there was no real sense of direction. In the days when Sub Pop was first starting to get going, there was always an 'anything goes' kind of mentality to every single one of these bands, who just seemed to be playing for the hell of it every time they stepped up on stage. And even though Singles may have been a part of the corporate machine that most bands despised, Cameron Crowe knew just what he was doing bringing together this soundtrack.

Setting his latest romantic comedy in the city of Seattle, most of the soundtrack here is comprised of some of the greatest grunge bands put under one roof. These weren't phoned in performances either, from Pearl Jam getting punky on the song State of Love and Trust to Mudhoney directly mocking the concept of being on this kind of corporate soundtrack on the song Overblown. Even some of the less grunge-y bands on this list fit perfectly, like the solo songs of Paul Westerberg giving you a look at where grunge got their influences from to Seattle legends Heart playing some stripped down material as the LoveMongers.

For all the money that was probably poured into this record, there's never a moment where it feels cynical or anything, just looking to have some fun with some of the most talented musicians that the city had to offer. If only there was a Nirvana song in the track listing, there's a good chance that this could be the greatest grunge record ever made.
