10 Legendary Bands That Were Actually Side Projects
7. The Raconteurs
The whole process of putting the White Stripes together in the first place came from a place of childhood. If you were to ask Jack White how he put the band together, he equated the chemistry between him and Meg to two children, always maintaining a sense of innocence with trying to make noise out of the bare minimum. There comes a moment where you’re going to want more though, and the Raconteurs was the first time that Jack started to grow up a little bit.
While Jack had known and respected his fellow musicians like Brandon Benson, hearing them work off of each other in this act is a lot closer to the ‘70s music that Jack was subtly cribbing from in his main outfit. Compared to the larger than life role he has to play in the Stripes, Jack practically takes a backseat, operating as co frontman as Benson takes his fair share of lead vocals as well.
Having more people also means drawing from different places as well, and Jack goes for something a little more rustic a lot of the time, cribbing from old country music every now and again but never letting go of the garage like spirit that comes from his upbringing. You can bring Jack White into your band, but that ramshackle attitude that he has towards his craft is probably never going to go away.
