10 Legendary Hard Rock Bands That Have Terrible Debut Albums

6. Pretties For You - Alice Cooper

The idea of Alice Cooper really fitting in with the crowd didn't really seem possible once he started getting the ball rolling. While the realm of shock rock has certainly broadened since Alice's time, his role as the scourge of the hard rock world couldn't stop tracks like School's Out and I'm Eighteen being blared over car stereos the world over. If you dress like Alice does though, you don't get there without doing some weird asides first.

Coming to the attention of Frank Zappa in the early days, Alice Cooper's first album Pretties For You got a pretty abysmal reception at first, and it's not all that hard to see why. Compared to the sonic pleasures that Bob Ezrin would put into albums like Love it To Death, this is one of the worst produced records in the history of music, making some of the greatest hardcore punk albums sound like hi fi productions.

Though songs like Reflected would get their own reworkings on later albums, most of this record sounds like something that Frank Zappa would be into, as instruments are deliberately thrown out of whack and being processed through every single psychedelic effect possible. The '60s may have in fact been a great age for rock and roll, but at what cost was it if it meant that we had to suffer something like this?
