10 Legendary Musicians That Play Multiple Instruments
2. Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters
As grunge started to slowly take over the world, Dave Grohl was becoming the true successor to John Bonham behind the drum kit. Even though Kurt Cobain's stage presence may have been the magic behind Nirvana, the true moment that Smells Like Teen Spirit clicked with you was the minute that Dave's crushing drum fill came into the mix. In the wake of Kurt's death though, we got a good idea of just how much Dave could do with the Foo Fighters.
Outside of just one lead guitar part, most of what you're hearing on the Foos' first album is just Dave, throwing together these songs originally as a demo to find more people to jam with. Once he stepped up to the role of frontman though, Dave never lost that sense of power, approaching the guitar very much like you would a drumset. Looking through songs like Everlong, Dave is playing in lock step with Taylor Hawkins, having the same sort of rhythmic discipline that you need to keep the song flowing from beginning to end.
Dave's knack for the drums has never really gone away though, as he would occasionally pop up to play drums on some of the biggest records of the '00s like Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf or With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails. While the plan may have been to be the wild animal behind the drum kit for the rest of his life, Dave always had a whole lot more to give than just beating the hell out of his drums.
