10 Legendary Musicians That Play Multiple Instruments
3. Geddy Lee - Rush
Throughout their entire existence as a band, Rush always maintained the idea of being a true power trio. Even though they may have some extensions on the record, they never played anything that couldn't be reproduced by just three people whenever they played live. That meant Neil Peart adding more drums onto his drum kit and for Geddy Lee to go from performer to circus act.
If you look at the beginnings of Rush, the set up is pretty standard, with Geddy playing bass and singing whenever the band played live. When synthesizers first came into the mix, Geddy also started to write most of his melodies on the keyboard, which translated a lot better as they went into the '80s. Even synthesizers wouldn't cut it though, leading to different bass pedals that Geddy would have to operate with his feet whenever he took the stage.
By the time that they got to their final few tours, you had Geddy shredding the bass and playing keyboards at the same time, all while trying to hit the right foot pedals and remember the lyrics to the songs in the process (God help the man if the microphone ever got knocked out of place). Of every other progressive rock band that came before or after Rush, Geddy Lee is the entire spirit of the genre. You can master just one instrument if you want to, but he's playing as many as he can until there is physically no other limbs left from him to use.
