10 Legendary Rock Bands That Made Metal Albums

4. Infest the Rat's Nest - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

You really need to not go into any of King Gizzard's albums with any expectations. These are guys that are looking to expand their musical palette with every single album, and you know whatever genre that they flirt with on one project isn't going to be that way for long. So when they made the kind of mellow pop rock going on on the album Fishing for Fishies, it was only natural that the next project would be gritty metal on Infest the Rat's Nest.

Although both of these albums feel like night and day next to each other, Rat's Nest actually has a similar environmental slant behind its lyrics, talking about the conservation of our planet with riffs that are enough to put some metal gods to shame. Then again, if you were going to categorize this as metal, it's not really clear what style of metal it fits into. While you can definitely call it heavy, this fits more in the vein of someone like Motorhead from the late '70s, back when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was slowly starting to morph into the sounds of thrash metal.

This entire thing could have practically been a novelty item if it weren't played so well, leaving all of the microtonal stuff in the past and just rocking the hell out for a little while. For as strange as this sounds coming out of King Gizzard, you could put a song like Planet B on a Rob Zombie record and nobody would bat an eye.
