10 Legendary Rock Bands With Sophomore Slump Albums
7. Second Coming - The Stone Roses
When you make an all time classic right out of the gate, there's always that mountain of pressure to do it all over again. In most cases, you either have to break away from your sound altogether or try and double down on your momentum and make songs that are just as good as before. For the less fortunate though, you end up going down the studio rabbit hole and never come back.
In the conversation of Britpop, The Stone Roses really should be considered the kings of the genre, with their first album basically giving birth to the entire genre almost overnight. While bands like Oasis and Pulp were coming up in their wake and making more radio friendly versions of their music, the journey to Second Coming was a lot more fractured, with no one being able to get on the same page once they eventually got to the studio.
You can really hear that disconnect on the album as well, with songs that go nowhere or go on for ages without saying much at all, as if they were trying to fit every single idea they had into every single song. There may have been some expectations for the next record, but this is where the Roses got too ambitious for their own good. Without that spark of creativity, all we have left is an album that has a few bright spots but far from a knockout from start to finish.
