10 Legendary Rock Songs That Were Insanely Controversial

9. The Last DJ - Tom Petty

It's no secret that the music industry isn't exactly a walk in the park. It is a business at the end of the day, and that normally involves a lot of sleazy people trying to make the most out of artists that they see more as pieces of meat than people. The businessmen may hold all the cards, but the musicians are the ones who can actually say something about it.

Although Tom Petty always played the game of rock and roll by his own rules, he was starting to get more and more irritated with where the music business was headed in the '00s, having different songs be censored and trying to take the power away from the artists. Framing the future of the music business in an apocalyptic scenario, the reality that Tom paints on the Last DJ points to the rock and roll that he knew when he was a kid, trying to find different artists that had a unique take on life rather than just the pretty face that would last for only a handful of years.

The rest of the album didn't exactly hold back either, with some radio stations refusing to play it because they thought it was an attack on them. For all of the whining that seems to be going on in this song, it's not like Tom wasn't right either, with radio stations trying their best to take over what we listen to, from the specific formula for pop songs to the algorithmic slant on streaming. Like it or not, we're practically living in the world that the Last DJ had warned us about.
