10 Legendary Rock Songs That Were Insanely Controversial

8. One In a Million - Guns N Roses

For all of the hair bands that liked to strut their stuff up and down Sunset, Guns N Roses seemed to be much more badass than their peers. A band like Poison may have been fun for the time, but there was no way to listen to a song like Every Rose Has Its Thorn with a straight face after hearing a song like Welcome to the Jungle. These guys were what rock and roll stood for, but their reputation as the World's Most Dangerous Band also came with a few awkward moments as well.

Although GNR Lies contains some of the band's most laid back songs like the acoustic single Patience, One in a Million is one of the more contentious songs of the glam metal movement, with Axl Rose trying on his best schtick at a crazy man talking on the streets of LA. After already coming off of some pretty harsh situations on Appetite for Destruction, these lyrics are extremely uncomfortable to listen to today, including using racist and homophobic slurs in between his verses, made especially weird since Slash is half black.

While Axl tried to deflect the blame of this song by saying that he intended those insults to be euphemisms for low lifes, that only draws more attention to actually using the slurs in the first place. He may have meant it as satire, but you're going to be in for some pretty strange conversations if this is the GNR song that you pull out at karaoke.
