10 Legends That Guested On Hard Rock Songs
4. Mama - My Chemical Romance
One of the biggest strengths of emo music back in the day was just how campy it was. For all of the people that actually had legitimate darkness inside of them that needed to be unleashed, there was definitely a level of showmanship involved, as evidenced by the endless amounts of eyeliner and whatever the hell was going on in Panic at the Disco’s first few music videos. And it’s not like one of the biggest bands in the genre weren’t afraid of a little theater action.
As you work your way through the Black Parade, the whole record does feel like a legitimate rock opera of old, taking all the elements of bands like Queen and making for a new sound that was unlike anything that the likes of Fall Out Boy had ever done. Mama is the turning point on the record, where the Patient knows he’s going to Hell and calls out for his mother and details the tortured relationship he had with her. Right when he’s at his lowest, his mother appears in the form of Liza Minneli, showing off the same pipes that she would use on the Broadway stage before the guitars swell back up again in this disastrous war like atmosphere.
As the outro calls back to Welcome to the Black Parade, you can still hear Liza in the background calling out in pain before breaking down in tears for the final few minutes. The Patient may have known that his time was short on this Earth, but he may be in for a nice little surprise when he finds himself in Hell.
