10 Live Covers Of Hard Rock Songs You Need To Hear
3. Best Of You - Prince
If Michael Jackson and Jimi Hendrix had a love child, they wouldn't be half as talented as Prince. He really didn't get enough credit as a guitar player. This was mostly due to the fact that his undeniable skill with the instrument was dwarfed by his ability to write unforgettable pop tracks.
Prince was famously averse to people covering his music; he thought it diminished the original version and it pained him when he wasn't recognised or credited correctly. Speaking to George Lopez about Sinead O'Conners cover of his song Nothing Compares 2 U, he said "[my] version doesn't exist anymore. A lot of the time people think I'm doing Sinead O'Conner's song".
But that didn't stop Prince covering other people's music. Whether through hypocrisy or to get back at artists who had previously covered his songs, who can say, but given the eccentricities Prince was prone to, it was probably a bit of both.
Prince performed the 2007 Super Bowl XLI half-time show during a downpour. Opening up with an electric introduction to All Along the Watch Tower, he transitioned seamlessly into the Foo Fighters track Best of You; it was pretty much just him and his guitar. There were drums somewhere in the background, but Prince didn't need them - his guitar-playing screamed with an intensity matched only by his voice.
