10 Masterpiece Albums Everyone Ignored
2. RAM - Paul McCartney
It may seem a bit strange putting one of the most successful artists of all time in a list about things that were ignored. Regardless of his pedigree with the Beatles, Paul McCartney was in a really bad spot as the '70s turned a corner. After making a homemade album in the form of his self-titled debut, the follow-up RAM was initially seen as a pretty disastrous sign of things to come.
Even McCartney's former bandmates lined up to bash this one, with even the good-natured Ringo Starr lamenting about there isn't one good tune on the record. However, there's a lot to unpack on RAM than you might typically find on the surface. Written when living his life on his farm, this is by far the most rustic recording Macca has ever put out, leading to some of the most enjoyable music of his career, from the homespun Heart of the Country to the internal freakout of Monkberry Moon Delight.
Though McCartney was known more for his melodic sensibilities than his lyrics, you can feel a bit of his pain throughout the songs, with Too Many People being an attack on John Lennon to the 'us-against-the-world' mentality on Back Seat of My Car, which was influenced by his new musical ventures with his wife Linda. While McCartney would eventually return to the refuge of a band with Wings, RAM might be one of the most under-celebrated records he has ever put to tape.
