10 Memorable Rock Bands Who Only Released ONE Album
1. Them Crooked Vultures, Them Crooked Vultures (2009)
The fusion of old and new, hard rock and classic rock, Them Crooked Vultures was the brainchild of the ubiquitous Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Eagles Of Death Metal) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). Formed in 2009, but with a history dating back to 2005, the super-trio saw Grohl return to drumming duties, with Homme on vocals and guitar, and Jones on bass and keys.
Their self-titled debut came hot on the heels of this announcement and was supported by live appearances into 2010. It features all the thrills one would expect from a Dave Grohl or Josh Homme record, while John Paul Jones' advanced multi-instrumentalism allows far greater sonic expansion via the incorporation of piano, clavinet, Optigan and mandolin. Jones' hand is also notably present in the overall production, which is clean and tight, despite the excitingly loose feel of the compositions.
While not as pure a work as other comparable supergroups have put together, the record's refusal to bend to convention sets it apart, and could be taken for the very ethos of the band itself.
The Vultures went on hiatus in mid-2010, only a year after they formed, and for a while thereafter came regular reports of a second effort. The rumour mill has since turned less and less frequently, and although all members have repeatedly confirmed their love of and dedication to the band, it unfortunately doesn't look like that sophomore record is going to surface any time soon.
