10 Metal Bands You Need To Hear Now

5. Thrawsunblatthrawsunblat Current Release: Thrawsunblat II: Wanderer on the Continent of Saplings Current label: None After the tragic death of Woods of Ypres front man David Gold in 2011, a close knit group of friends and musicians performed a tribute show, and from that show one of Gold's other projects, Thrawsunblat was given new life. Guitarist/vocalist Joel Violette and drummer Rae Amitay, who were scheduled to record the next Woods of Ypres album came together and finished what Gold and Violette started in 2010 with their Canada release. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD4opX_mDjU Though a different overall sound than Woods of Ypres later releases V and VI, being a more folky black metal project with a sound somewhere between Suidakra, Borknagar and the early Woods of Ypres releases, the visage of Gold haunts Thrawsunblat II as Violette channels his somber clean vocals into a moving performance. Musically there is a lot of styles, from bouncy folky jigs ("Lifelore Revelation"), sea shanties ("Maritime Shores") and full on black metal assaults ("I Am the Viator"), but the melancholic undertone carried by the band members' loss and spirit of Gold linger in every note.

I am metal. I am so metal I ejaculate mercury. OK, love puppies, pro football and my daughter, so how's that for balance? I own a little metal blog called teethofthedivine.com and used to write for Metal Maniacs, Unrestrained magazines and currently help out with Hails and Horns and New Noise magazines. Yeah- I guess I am metal.
