10 Metal Cover Songs That Sound Nothing Like The Original

5. Spit it Out - Corey Taylor

It's hard to really gauge what the original artist will think of you covering their song. While you should always look to please yourself first and foremost, there is a sort of strange responsibility that comes with taking on someone else's work and making it your own. So, what happens when you actually manage to cover yourself?

During one of Corey Taylor's famous book tours, he would often have a segment where he would bring out an acoustic guitar and jam with a couple of friends for the second half of the night. In between the covers and acoustic versions of Through Glass, Corey had a surprise at one gig where he took on Slipknot's Spit It Out completely unplugged, changing up the arrangement entirely. Compared to the headbanging monster that we got in the original, this is a straight bluegrass version of the tune, as Taylor puts on his country twang to make it sound like something you could play around the campfire.

The initial performance ended up going so well that Corey would eventually leave it in his unplugged set off and on whenever he went on his solo shows, even throwing in his trademark scream at the very end of things. Given that Slipknot is known to be on the more aggressive side of the spectrum, this was the sonic left turn that no one was prepared for.
