10 Metal Cover Songs That Sound Nothing Like The Original
6. One - Chris Cornell
The entire musical culture of the past 20 years has been defined by mashups. Whether it's through the dance remixes happening across the club scene or the meme team ups you get with Neil Cicierega, the entire concept of genre is almost becoming fluid given how many people borrow from each respective style. That kind of freewheeling doesn't really click with a cover song...unless you've got Chris Cornell at the helm.
During a gig in the 2010's, Cornell was performing on an acoustic guitar when he starts strumming the chords to U2's One. As the audience starts to perk up, Cornell goes on a slight tangent about having trouble finding the lyrics to the song for the show that night, instead being misdirected to Metallica's One instead. So what did he do? How about both at the exact same time?
In one of the more creative covers ever made, Cornell takes the lyric melody from U2's track and puts the Metallica lyrics on top of it, creating an oddly uplifting tune about being trapped inside your own mind with no hope for survival. As goofy as this sounds, Cornell is dead serious in his performance, giving it his all and tearing through the lyrics like he came up with it on the spot. It might not be what you expected, but it might just be what you need.
