10 Metal Songs Inspired By Famous Movies
5. Storytime – Nightwish
Inspiration: The Snowman
Nightwish are the most popular symphonic metal band in the world, and with good reason. Tuomas Holopainen’s skills as a songwriter have enabled the group to rise above their peers and remain popular despite major line-up changes.
‘Storytime’ – as the name suggests – has a fairy-tale quality to it. There are references to Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and even classic mythology. Yet the biggest influence for ‘Storytime’ comes from The Snowman.
The chorus is sung from the perspective of the snowman during the film’s iconic flying sequence. Frontwoman Anette Olzon describes the scene below the soaring snowman as well as the sensation of moving through the air. The rest of the song echoes this theme with a Christmassy instrumental and an uplifting set of choral vocals.
As such, ‘Storytime’ is certainly on the lighter side of the band’s discography. But despite the marginalisation of the heavy guitars, this single from the band’s seventh album has plenty of replay value thanks to its distinct atmosphere.
