No, this is not a wind-up. You’d probably struggle to find a child over the age of one in the whole of the English-speaking world who doesn’t know all the words to this classic nursery rhyme. It’s like a preschool Mr. Brightside - you can’t remember the first time you heard it, or when you learned it off by heart, you just know that it is engrained deep into the fibre of your being.

Originally written in 1806 by poet Jane Taylor, it has gone on to be an all-conquering smash hit amongst the toddler community for centuries. But there’s a theory that it contains a much darker message.

Some people claim that, played backwards, the song actually says: “I wish there were no Allah”, and that it is a subliminal message designed to indoctrinate children into atheism from an early age by disparaging the Arabic word for god. Somehow seems unlikely, but you can’t deny how it sounds on tape…
