10 Mind-Blowing Secrets Hidden In Famous Songs

7. Pink Floyd - Empty Spaces

Another cheeky subversion of the whole backmasking/Satanic worship trope here, as Pink Floyd decided to take the trend and have a little fun with it instead. On Empty Spaces, just before the lyrical section of the track, there’s a hissing, garbled swell of indistinguishable noise that comes through the left hand side of the mix.

Played forward it is pure nonsense, and could easily be mistaken for nothing whatsoever, but played backwards, it reveals the kind of absurd, surreal message you just might expect from the kings of prog rock.

It starts with Roger Waters piping up: “Hello looker... Congratulations! You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont…” He is then interrupted by producer James Guthrie, who cuts him off before he can fully reveal the address by saying: “Roger! Carolyne's on the phone!”. Incredibly, this is still the only known Pink Floyd song that contains back-masking.
