10 Mistakes Purposefully Left In Classic Rock Songs

5. Polly - Nirvana

Nirvana's lyrics were never really known to be on par with Shakespeare. Out of all of their big hits, you were never supposed to figure out the inner workings of something like Smells Like Teen Spirit or Lithium. At the same time, when these guys wanted to get serious, they could - such as the hell of a gut punch they gave you on Polly.

Compared to the rest of Nevermind, this deep dive into the mind of a sexual abuser is a lot more solemn than many were probably expecting. Even though there is a lot of uncomfortable imagery to unpack on here, there are a few little bits of studio banter in between. Recorded in between their sessions at Sound City Studios, this original take actually has Kurt Cobain starting the final verse too early, with him correcting himself after the first "Polly says..."

Rather than just go over the whole thing again, Cobain ended up liking the more stuttered delivery, feeling that it worked better with the ominous tone of the song. This is also one of the few times in which the mistake became intentional, with Kurt doubling down on the screwup on the new wave version of the tune that ended up on Incesticide. You always have to be careful when tackling dark subjects like this, but when even your foul-ups enhance the song, you know you got something good.
