10 Modern Albums That Prove Psychedelia Is Alive And Well
9. Kurt Vile - Wakin' On A Pretty Daze
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq5sb6_W4LUThe opening track of Kurt Vile's 2013 masterpiece is a hazy ten minutes of guitars and laconic vocals. Most of the album sticks to this calm, breezy aesthetic but never gets pretentious. Vile's entire output sticks close to a sort of slacker classic rock style, but appropriated for a modern context.
I have no hesitation to call this a driving album. Closing your eyes and taking in every song conjures up images of lazily holding the wheel of your car as you coast down some disgustingly scenic highway without a care.
Though the album does not drift off into a dangerous sort of carelessness. It's psych-rock for the working class. It's stoned, but striving for peace of mind. It revels in happiness, but does not get too distracted that it burns out. It's a blissed out sensation perfect for summer.
