10 More Bands Who Had Huge Potential (But Wasted It)

2. New Radicals

The story of the New Radicals is as fascinating as it is head-scratching.

The group was formed as a project of Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois in 1997, with a series of session musicians filling the blank spaces. In October 1998, they put out their first album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, which was followed by the juggernaut of a single that was You Get What You Give.

This ultra-happy tune took the world by storm, as everyone thought they were witnessing the rise of the next big thing. In reality, what they were looking at would turn out to be the end.

Alexander announced in 1999 that New Radicals were done, just two weeks before the planned release of their second single. The singer basically said that he had achieved everything he wanted to with You Get What You Give and didn’t want to be famous anymore.

And that was the end of that.

Brisebois’ opinions on all of this are very hard to track down, but fingers crossed she wasn’t as surprised by this announcement as everyone else was.
