10 More Happy Songs That Are Insanely Dark
1. Maxwell's Silver Hammer - The Beatles
Being in the company of true greatness, Maxwell's Silver Hammer is sandwiched between 'Something' and 'Oh! Darling' on the utterly immense Abbey Road. The band aged like a fine wine, and though the late 60's were a huge deviation from their simple, pop-rock beginnings, it was the penultimate (though technically final) studio album of their ten year career that brought the best out of the Fab Four.
Simply put, there are few things as perfect as the first half of The Beatles' 1969 album, and throwing a curveball song about a serial killer wrapped in a childish, plodding tune was something that fans of the band's earlier material surely weren't expecting.
Maxwell's Silver Hammer's jolly jingle clouds the twisted tale being told in its lyrics. The titular Maxwell Edison is a student-come-serial killer, bonking several of his classmates and teachers on the head as the song unfolds. It's immensely creepy, and is only made worse by the song's commitment to a happy atmosphere until the very end. It's the kind of song that plays in Joker's mind as he flagrantly poisons Gotham City's water supply, and its inclusion on Abbey Road only elevates the album's quality even higher.
Go figure.
