10 More Happy Songs That Are Insanely Dark

2. Wrong Way - Sublime

The ska-punk craze of the mid-1990's was lead by a collection of awesome bands, from Rancid to No Doubt and everything in-between. Planted firmly in the mix was Sublime, a short-lived Long Beach, California-based group who were known for their bouncy tunes and stoner attitude.

Sublime had just one single reach the top of the US Billboard charts, 1996's What I Got. However, featured on the very same album was Wrong Way, a typically foot-tapping anthem that's par for the course for the genre.

Well, it would have been typical had it not been for the gross tale being told in its lyrics. The song follows Annie, a young girl who's awful family situation forces her into all manner of grim things. Thankfully, the song's narrator lends a hand, and the story's second half seems to be a slightly more uplifting series of events. The comfort of the familiar jazzy trumpets and deep bass notes doesn't hide just how tough the first minute of the ~2 minute tune are to listen to, however.

Wrong Way is testament to just how distracting ska-punk music can be, as the twisted tale present in the song doesn't negate just how fun it is to listen to.
