10 More Happy Songs That Are Insanely Dark

7. Today - The Smashing Pumpkins

Easily the most overlooked feature on the Guitar Hero: World Tour soundtrack, The Smashing Pumpkins' Today is decidedly darker than the grungy guitars and breathy vocal notes would lead you to believe.

The Chicago-based rock band have an impressive discography of music spanning through the late 20th century and into the 2000's, and Billy Corgan's stellar songwriting has often been the focal point of the band's success. Today is a fine example of this, albeit a glum one, as the 1993 tune is largely about Corgan's thoughts of suicide, and being welcoming of the end as it's the day where things can't get any worse.

The meaty, epic-feeling chorus does well to hide the dark themes of Today, and audiences would be forgiven for thinking that it's just another mid-90's alt-rock anthem as a result, but as the verses kick in and the melody returns to a simpler affair, the themes of the song become more apparent.

Corgan now splits his time between creating music and owning the illustrious NWA wrestling promotion, which is a far happier life than the song would indicate. Nobody should have to endure such emotions, and using them to create a truly amazing song is nothing short of incredible.
