3. Turnstile: Glow On (2021)
Baltimore based group Turnstile are proving you don't need to conform to a strict checklist to constitute being a hardcore band. In an era of post-gene music, they're hard to pin down. The incorporation of ever more eclectic styles is becoming more common place - and these guys do it masterfully. Hardcore mixed with alt rock, funk, metal and even a touch of Latin rhythms are expertly integrated into Turnstile's sound.
The opening two numbers from their third album, will have you thinking this is just a rehash of noughties metal. But you can't get away from the sounds of '80s synth-pop peppering the mix. Every time you think you have these guys sussed, it turns out to be a clever instance of misdirection. Underwater Boi takes a Mac DeMarco guitar tone and introduces to a world of chaos. Holiday opens up with a bass line reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, before launching into a hard driving punk number.
This group is worth your attention - whether their blend of styles works for you or not, they have an undeniable allure.
