10 More Perfect 1980s Hard Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
8. Kick - INXS (1987)
If there was one instrument that defined the '80s it was the synthesiser. A monkey could get hold of one of these things, and after half a dozen attempts, it would have a decent melody. You just hold a single key and let all the synchronised modulation do the rest. It was the sound of pop music. If you wanted a hit in the '80s you'd be a fool not to include at-least a modicum of synthesiser.
Australian rock group, INXS, certainly recognised this. Their sixth studio album embraced a far more dance-pop take on rock. With funky bass lines, and radio savvy chorus hooks, this album was a finely crafted collection of pop songs - with just enough guitar, to justify the wearing of leather jackets.
Tracks like The Loved One, were inspired by classic rock n' roll, but it was rock n' roll with a disco beat. You also had, Need You Tonight, one of the most defining grooves of the decade. As soon as that repeated chord riff kicks in, you're compelled to bust a move. But the biggest track was, Never Tear Us Apart - a song covered by Tom Jones in the '90s, and again by Paloma Faith in the 2010s. It's become so widely circulated on TV ads and romance movie montages, that everyone recognises it.
