10 More Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
9. Cage The Elephant - Cage The Elephant (2008)
Due to the fact Cage The Elephant released their debut album at a time when indie rock was the hot thing, they often get roped in with all those other bands of that era. Although the album did have indie elements, with twangy guitar hooks and a number of uptempo easy to get on board with melodies, this record had its own thing going on.
There wasn't the same Southern blues rock vibe of early Kings Of Leon records, but you could nevertheless sense the Southern influences on the Kentucky boys, particularly with the single Ain't No Rest For The Wicked. But, the overriding sense you got from the record, was that it was influenced by punk. Rhythm guitarist Brad Shultz embodied this with his simplified chord progressions and aggressive approach to keeping time.
Although this wasn't the most accomplished or critically acclaimed album the band would release, it was a solid way to introduce themselves. It was full of energy, and each song had merit, you never get the sense these guys were retreading territory they've already gone over somewhere else on the track list.
This album laid some damn solid foundations for what would come next.
