10 More Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

8. Good News For People Who Love Bad News – Modest Mouse (2004)

This record was a huge departure from Modest Mouse's original indie rock driven sound. It still contained some of those core elements but the addition of horn and string sections, and a more refined production style, elevated this album above any they had released previously, or since.

The classic 2000s style of indie guitar is still very prominent, but there are all these other elements being pulled in. You can hear the influences of the Pixies throughout the record and there are some distinctly new-wave/ David Byrne inspired vocal deliveries, but it's certainly not derivative.

Isaac Brock retained a moody and melancholic approach to his lyricism, and there's huge displays of his eccentric vocal style, but it still fits comfortably with the maturer sound of the music. Many of the tracks feel busy but you get the sense this was intentional. In many cases it helps convey the desperate message in Brock's lyrics, particularly when he's harkening on about the futile nonsense of modern living.

The album only builds in nervous excitement. From the initial calm opening track, there's a real frenzy to later songs, It all makes for one satisfying experience.
