10 More Perfect Grunge Albums With No Bad Songs
7. Stone Temple Pilots: Core (1992)
You wouldn't be remiss for thinking Stone Temple Pilots sound awfully like some other well known '90s grunge acts. Indeed, this gave many critics pause when their debut was released. On the surface the similarities to Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains, seemed almost deliberate.
Scott Weiland had a croon not unlike Eddie Vedder, which was ridiculed almost immediately. And, the '70s heavy metal inspired guitar drew unflattering comparisons to Alice In Chains. But the fanbase couldn't have disagreed with the critics more. The group's ability to divide consensus was demonstrated when in the same issue, Rolling Stone Magazine announced STP as best new group, as voted by readers, and worst new group, as voted by critics. Now, if that isn't indication that a rock group are doing something right, what is?
The riffs on Sex Type Thing and Wicked Garden exhibited Dean DeLeo as one of the more talented guitarists of the time. Before long, Scott Weiland was hailed as one of the finest voices in modern rock. The fact of the matter was STP had their own thing going on from the get go, it just took the fans to tell the critics what was up.
