10 More Rock Music Albums That Were Way Ahead Of Their Time
4. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Folk punk band Violent Femmes needn't have bothered releasing any more albums after their self-titled 1984 debut, because they pretty much nailed it first time.
Not only is it still their biggest seller, but it also contains several of their biggest songs. Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Add It Up, and Gone Daddy Gone all have a home on this record and all remain popular staples of the group's live shows to this very day.
Punk was nothing new when Violent Femmes came out. In fact, by 1984, it was long dead. So why is this album on here?
There was a humble quality to the Femmes' music; an earnestness that came from their rather uninformed approach to recording music. The album sounded raw, unfiltered, and DIY. But that didn't detract one bit from its sense of humour or detached look at the world.
In short, Violent Femmes made a '90s alternative album almost a decade too early.
The Femmes would have fit right in with the dismissive, sarcastic stars of the following decade, but alas, they were too early. Ah well, they seem to have done okay for themselves regardless.
