2. Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun (22 September)

For years now, folk/experimental/gothic solo performer Chelsea Wolfe has flirted with heavy metal. However, 2017 may be the year where she goes full-on doomy with her upcoming fifth LP entitled Hiss Spun.

The gloomy crooner’s last release Abyss saw her sink into a dark place, combining elements of folk, electronica, and heavy metal to stunning effect. Now, with Converge linchpin Kurt Ballou on production duties, she looks set to drop her heaviest record to date, releasing two doom-laden body blows from it in the form of “16 Psyche” and “Vex.” Whether she’s singing over minimal instrumentation or a full-blown backing band, Wolfe’s otherworldly vocals and claustrophobic sound is always prevalent – no mean feat either given how heavy tracks like “16 Psyche” and “Vex” are.

Hiss Spun hasn’t even been released yet, but things are already looking mighty promising off the back of the two tracks put out so far. Miss this one at your own peril.
