10 Most Controversial Metal Albums Of The 21st Century
6. Saturday Night Wrist - Deftones
Deftones is one of those rare bands that you seem to get once in a lifetime. Even though they are labelled nu metal for a handful of records, they were always doing their own thing regardless of what genre you wanted to throw on them. There aren't too many misses when it comes to this band's brand of heaviness, but if there's one outlier in the catalog, it has to be Saturday Night Wrist.
Things initially seemed to be looking good, with the band drafting superproducer Bob Ezrin to steer the project, but the tension became too much for the band to handle as time went on. With the band butting heads, they decided to take a break for a while and return to the music after some time off. When they arrived back, issues only escalated, with the vocal tracks completely wiped and started again from scratch.
Though the album was a hit amongst critics and had guest appearances from guys like Serj Tankian, Saturday Night Wrist turned into the one sore spot in the band's catalog. Even Moreno has talked about his disdain for the project, saying that it had come out of the remnants of his broken marriage and an addiction to drugs. The uncomfortable nature of this project may have brought the band to the stellar followup Diamond Eyes, but taken on its own, Saturday Night Wrist is the sound of a band at their wit's end.
