10 Most Controversial Songs In Rock History
1. Angel of Death - Slayer
If you've been following the more controversial side of rock and roll for any length of time, you know that is always comes back to heavy metal. Long after Elvis first shook his ass in front of a microphone, the allure of a band like Black Sabbath just felt like the polar antithesis of what the nice youth of the country was supposed to be listening to. Though we have seen our fair share of gross stuff now with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, Angel of Death by Slayer is where it starts getting a bit too real.
Looking for the most feral things to write about, most of this song comes down to the Nazi regime of World War II bringing death to millions of innocent people around the world. Even the opening line is terrifying in and of itself, with Tom Araya's scream getting more and more pained as it goes on.
Then again, it's no surprise to see some parents taking it the wrong way, accusing Slayer of sympathizing with the Nazis and advocating that what the Aryan race did was a good thing. If you listened to the lyrics though, there's nothing actively promoting Nazi practices or anything, instead just showing the heinous acts for what they are and letting the listener decide as to what they think of the events that happened. As Kerry King said when talking about it back in the day, if you took the heavy metal riffs and tortured vocals out of it, the entire thing could have been a special on the History Channel about World War II.
