10 Most Depressing Music Videos Of The 21st Century

1. Monsters - James Blunt

It didn't seem possible that music videos could become any sadder or depressing, before this music video came along and destroyed our very souls. Like other songs on the list, it is when viewed within the real life context that the video really hits home. The context here is that James Blunt's father has just been diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease, which is incurable.

The song is Blunt's final message to his father, emphasising that he is a good friend now as well as a parent. Blunt's raw emotion pours out, a close up of his real life heartbreak bravely on show for the viewer.

The real pull on the heart strings occurs when the camera slowly zooms out to show father and son sitting next to each other. The director thankfully doesn't add any unnecessary melodrama to the situation, the two men sitting next to each other as friends do, with Blunt's father occasionally reaching his arm over to comfort his son. It may be depressing, but it's also bloody powerful stuff that makes you want to ring your own parents straight away for a chat.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
