10 Most Depressing Music Videos Of The 21st Century

2. Take Me To Church - Hozier

This music video is perhaps the boldest on the list and represents a real horror story, especially with its fictional story being scarily realistic. The plot follows a gay couple who are trying to hide their love affair from those around them, who literally hunt them down.

A small chest symbolic of their love and their desires is buried for safe keeping, only to be dug up and destroyed by a gang of angry thugs. The action can be taken as a metaphor or as a literal story, but is equally devastating in which ever context it is viewed.

The heartbreaking finale in which the small chest is burnt while one of the gay men is beaten up is truly hard to watch. It's also equally hard to stomach that there are still way too many men in our supposedly advanced world on the side of the thugs.
