The entire music world seemed to stop when "Gangnam Style" invaded the charts in 2012. It almost seemed too weird to be a hit, with the concept being a K-pop star pushing 40 infiltrating the mainstream market with a song that was not sung in English. Things like this just don't happen on the charts, but it somehow found a way, with fans across the world making their own version of the signature horse riding stance.
People may have heard it on a playlist or even on the radio, but ground zero was the video, which to this day has notched up over 3 billion views of YouTube. However, you don't get over half of the world's population to listen to your song without a fair bit of hate. For as amazing as the video is from a visual perspective, the entire appeal of the song may have been seen as sensory overload for some, which caused many listeners to tap out.
This was also another example of the overplay factor, with many people disliking the songs simply because they had heard it so many times. Any music fan would want to have their favorite song on replay, but when the replay doesn't stop for months on end, things go from endearing to annoying pretty fast.
