10 Most Disturbing Music Videos In Hard Rock
5. Jeremy - Pearl Jam
For the longest time, it seemed that Pearl Jam had sworn off making any more music videos. After the rapid success of the group on the strength of their album Ten, Eddie Vedder made a conscious decision to ease up on the promotional process, leaving people to focus on the music rather than some grand spectacle on screen. Then again, you don't really need to prove your credentials when you knock it out of the park with Jeremy.
Written around the real life story of a boy who killed himself in front of his classmates, this video is one of the darkest things to ever come out of the grunge era. Intermingling shots of Vedder with the actor for Jeremy, most of the video seems to reflect the dejected side of this young man, before eventually culminating in him showing up to school and putting a gun in his mouth.
Though MTV refused to play the initial version of the video, just showing the kids' reactions in stone led to the exact opposite reception, with many people thinking that Jeremy had opened fire on his classroom rather than the actual suicidal nature of the film. Regardless of the muddied message of the original video, this is still one of the most unnerving videos to ever find its way to the top of the rock charts.
