10 Most Expensive Rock Albums Ever Made

6. One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back! - The Darkness (£1 Million)

British glam rock band The Darkness were on top of the world in 2003.

Their debut album, Permission to Land, was an undeniable success, spawning hit song after hit song and making everyone involved very rich indeed.

One album wasn't going to be enough though, so they needed to make something new. Cue the fantastically-named One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back!

In a strange bit of continuity, this album was also produced by Roy Thomas Baker, the man behind A Night at the Opera. Clearly Roy has a thing for bands with flamboyant frontmen who like to spend lots of money.

Baker's fee, combined with a delayed release, might have been what caused the record's cost to balloon. In an interview, guitarist Dan Hawkins said that the album cost £1 million to make.

In today's money, that's about £1.7 million or $2.2 million.

That's an expensive train ticket, although not as expensive as trying to get from London to Edinburgh with a week's notice.

Unfortunately for many fans, the wait was not worth it. One Way Ticket was not as beloved as what had come before it and began the slow decline of The Darkness as a major force.
