10 Most Hated Grunge Albums Of All Time
9. Yourself Or Someone Like You - Matchbox Twenty
By the end of the '90s, all of the authenticity of the original grunge movement was getting far more sanitized by the minute. While you had the dark side of the genre like Staind combining the angsty vocals of grunge with nu metal, all of the other media-friendly acts were getting too pampered than any self-respecting rocker should. Even though there were a few saving graces, Matchbox Twenty never really had a shot with the grunge faithful.
That's not even to say that Yourself or Someone Like You is all that bad of a record. In fact, there is some genuinely great material on here like 3am and Push, and yet it sounds so unbelievable coming from Rob Thomas's voice. Though the notes are all correct coming from his throat, this just felt like one of the weaker attempts of a guy trying to sound like Eddie Vedder, at a time when we weren't short of those gravelly singers.
This also hit a particularly sour note with the regular grunge fans, what with the rest of the band looking a lot more well-off than the grunge acts originally coming from Seattle. This was long past the days of Soundgarden...this was that discount grunge that was made to play over grocery store overheads and in the middle of shopping malls. Not bad mind you...just in the the exact wrong place for the rock community.
