10 Most Haunting Songs In Rock

1. Hurt - Nine Inch Nails/ Johnny Cash (1995/2002)

The two versions of this track are both heavy with their own hauntingly evocative connotations, despite the lyrical content remaining the same for the most part.

When Trent Reznor sang Hurt it was a ballad that expressed the isolation felt by a young man wrapped up in depression, substance abuse and alienation from his loved ones.

When Johnny Cash sang it, however, his poetically beautiful rendition took on another meaning all together - that of an aged icon, long since passed the arrogance of youth and reflecting on his many faults and folly's over his years.

Mark Romanek's powerful music video elevated the meaning given to the song, with footage of an aged and crestfallen Cash depicted around his lavish home, intercut with images of the country singers acclaimed past.

Cash's infidelities and long history of drug and alcohol abuse had been known to the public, and when he sang that song, all of those came flooding back. He was the legendary Man In Black but even a legend could have regret it seemed.

Cash's version was made more impactful, as this expression of remorse and regret came less than a year before his death in 2003.
