Where most other artists would fade into obscurity throughout some stage in their career, David Bowie always had the incredible ability to re-invent himself time and time again, remaining relevant throughout every decade he was performing in. He was as big a cultural icon as they come, with his legendary alter-ego Ziggy Stardust being at the forefront of his career during the early 1970’s.

On his final show of a tour in Hammersmith in 1973, David Bowie declared that it would be the last show the band would ever do. The collective sigh and gasps of the audience at the time was echoed across the world, with many believing this was David Bowie retiring from the music business altogether.

In fact, he was simply killing off his most inspired creation, feeling that the character had run its course and wanting to create something new, his follow-up alter-ego Aladdin Sane was born.

It was believed that killing Ziggy Stardust would end his career, this was after all, the character which had really lifted him into international stardom. It was a real testament to just how brilliant David Bowie was, as shortly afterwards he would write critically acclaimed albums Station to Station, Low and Heroes before becoming the most famous popstar in the world during the 1980’s.
