10 Most Iconic Music Albums Turning 50 In 2023

4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

By far his most recognisable record, and packed to the brim with timeless classics, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is an essential cornerstone to any music lovers of the 1970s. This album is Elton and fellow songwriter Bernie Taupin at the peak of their musical brilliance, displaying a range of dynamics, from heart-pumping highs of tracks like Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting), to the emotive melodies of songs such as Candle in the Wind. Even more impressive, it’s hard to believe that this record took only two weeks to record.

Staying at number one for eight weeks upon its release is a testimony to how brilliant this record is. The album received huge success on release, becoming the best selling album in the US the following year, and has since become platinum certified. Its anniversary this coming October leaves fans wondering if there will be any special releases to commemorate this 1970s staple.

Half a century on, many of the songs - including Bennie and the Jets and the title track - have seen a resurgence in popularity on social media, and rightly so. With his monumental Glastonbury headline set being said by Elton himself to be his last performance in the UK, fans are left with a bittersweet feeling, seeing the final curtains being drawn on a legendary career spanning nearly six decades.
