10 Most Iconic Music Albums Turning 50 In 2023

5. Goats Head Soup - The Rolling Stones

Released in August 1973, Goats Head Soup is the 11th studio album of The Rolling Stones’ impressive back catalogue. With the most standout single being the ballad Angie, this album perhaps isn’t known as one of the jewels in The Stones’ crown of monumental records.

Transitioning from their 1960s sound of blues and psychedelia into the new sounds of the 1970s, at a time when glam rock was thriving and funk music was the soundtrack of the underground, The Stones needed to establish themselves in a new decade whilst grasping onto their self-proclaimed title of “World’s Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band”.

Recording mostly in Jamaica - thanks to the band’s tax exile - The Stones were starting to feel the toll from their newly-adopted luxurious lifestyle of glamourous girlfriends, extreme drug taking, and an excessive American tour. Heavily inspired by their tropical setting, The Stones embraced the culture, inviting Jamaican musicians to jam with them on records, creating an atmosphere which contributed to their exploration of new sounds.

Celebrating Goats Head Soup's 50th anniversary this August, a boxset containing original session recordings, alternative mixes and unreleased tracks on CD and Blu-ray, is a treat for even the most die-hard Stones fans.
