10 Most Iconic Music Albums Turning 50 In 2023

2. Band On The Run - Paul McCartney & Wings

Released in December 1973, becoming a top selling album the following year, Band on the Run is Wings' third studio album and McCartney’s fifth album released after splitting with The Beatles in 1970. Often rated as the best Wings album, singles including Jet and Band on the Run have helped ensure the record's long-time success. Featuring catchy arrangements, melodic rhythms and expanding genre usage, listeners are treated to Paul McCartney at the top of his game as he continues to leave The Beatles behind.

Recorded in the sunny tropics of Lagos, Nigeria, McCartney wanted an exotic location to let the creativity flow. With the unexpected departure of two band members, though, Paul resorted to playing not only most of the leading guitar parts but also played bass, drums and percussion, solidifying his undeniable musical genius in songwriting and technical instrumental abilities.

This was to be McCartney’s last album issued by Apple, marking the end of an era for the legendary label. What began as a slow climb up the charts, soon turned into a meteoric rise, with Band on the Run remaining in the UK Charts for a colossal 124 weeks.
